About El Castro

El Castro (Monte O Castro) is the hilltop park above the old centre of Vigo, in Galicia, and the city's best-known viewpoint over the estuary. It is also the site of the remains of a 17th century fortress that once helped defend the city. Come for the panorama, stay for the layers of history under your feet.

The story behind it

The hill has been a lookout for a very long time. Its summit was a natural place to watch the sea, and in the 17th century it was fortified as part of Vigo's defences, alongside the Castle of San Sebastián and the city walls. Together they formed a system meant to protect the town and its harbour from attack by sea and land.

That system had several enclosures. The upper one is the summit of Monte do Castro, now laid out as a park and viewpoint. A lower one was the Castle of San Sebastián, whose site today is the Plaza del Rey and the Town Hall area. The third was the city wall itself, which has since disappeared from the streets. Walking from the hill down to the centre is, in a way, walking the old line of defence.

What to look for

  • The panorama from the summit viewpoint, where the whole estuary opens out below you with the port and the rooftops of Vigo in the foreground.
  • The remains of the fortress walls on the hilltop, which show how the stone defences were fitted to the shape of the hill.
  • The line of the old defences between the hill and the lower town, which you can read by looking down towards the Town Hall and the Plaza del Rey.
  • The way the city climbs the slope towards you, with the working harbour at the bottom and the water stretching out beyond it.

Tips for your visit

  • Allow about an hour if you want to walk the park, look at the fortress remains and take in the views without rushing.
  • Choose a clear day, and late afternoon if you can, when the light is soft over the estuary. Haze or low cloud can hide the far shore.
  • The hill is a climb from the centre, so wear comfortable shoes and take water in warm weather.
  • Combine it with the area around the Plaza del Rey and the Town Hall, which sit on the site of the Castle of San Sebastián and are easy to reach on foot on the way down.

See it on a quest

Discovering Vigo: a journey home passes El Castro, so you reach the hill on foot as one stop on a longer route through the city rather than as an isolated detour. The app tells you about each place as you arrive, and you solve a puzzle based on what is in front of you, which makes you look harder at the view and the stones. It is a paid quest, and one ticket covers the whole group.
