About Tampa Theatre

Tampa Theatre is a restored 1920s movie palace on North Franklin Street in downtown Tampa, Florida. Designed by architect John Eberson in the atmospheric style, it is known for an auditorium that feels like a Mediterranean courtyard under a night sky. It still shows films and hosts events today, so you can see a historic interior in everyday use.

The story behind it

The theatre opened in 1926, at the height of the picture palace era, when cinemas were built to feel like a night out in a far-off place. John Eberson specialised in this atmospheric design: ornate walls, statues and decorative detail around the audience, and a ceiling meant to look like open sky.

Like many downtown cinemas, it faced an uncertain future as audiences drifted away from city centres. It was saved rather than torn down, and it is now listed on the National Register of Historic Places. It remains one of the best-loved buildings in Tampa.

What to look for

  • The marquee and vertical sign over Franklin Street are the first thing you see, and they look best when lit after dark.
  • Inside, the ceiling is designed to read as a night sky, with small lights for stars and the impression of drifting clouds.
  • The walls and lobby carry statues and ornamental details that make the auditorium feel like an outdoor courtyard.
  • The posters and listings near the entrance show the programme, which mixes classic films with newer releases and live events.

Tips for your visit

  • Allow 15 to 20 minutes to admire the exterior and the surrounding block. Plan on a few hours if you come for a film.
  • Go in the evening if you can. The marquee is at its best then, and that is when most screenings and events take place.
  • The easiest way inside is to see a film or an event, so check the current schedule and opening hours before you go.
  • Downtown Tampa is compact, and the Tampa Riverwalk is a short walk away, so the theatre pairs well with a stroll along the water.
