About Customs House
Where Sydney's Circular Quay meets the city's colonial past, the elegant sandstone facade of Customs House has been watching ships come and go for nearly two centuries. The first customs building appeared on this spot as early as 1800, but the grand structure you see today was built between 1844 and 1845 under Governor Gipps, designed by colonial architect Mortimer Lewis in the Greek Revival style. For almost 150 years, every item entering or leaving Sydney Harbour passed through the bureaucratic machinery inside these walls, from imported luxury goods to exported wool and wheat. Customs operations finally ceased in 1990, closing a chapter that had begun when the colony was barely out of its convict-era infancy. The building's second life began in 2005 when it reopened as a City of Sydney library and cultural space, a transformation that preserved the architectural grandeur while giving it fresh purpose. The ground floor features a remarkable scale model of the Sydney CBD embedded in the floor under glass, letting visitors literally walk over a miniature version of the city above. The Greek Revival sandstone exterior remains one of the finest examples of colonial architecture in Sydney, its columns and proportions speaking to a time when civic buildings were designed to impress and endure. Questo's Sydney heritage trail pauses at this elegant survivor where commerce, culture, and colonial ambition meet at the water's edge.
