We are a group of language students and we played the game with our teacher: a great and fun way to practise, and learn interesting stuff about our city that we didn't know.

Quests for classes

Quests a class can play in Copenhagen

A Questo school day in Copenhagen stays on foot in the old centre, the royal quarter and along the harbour. Key Stage 2 classes usually start at the Royal Danish Theatre on Kongens Nytorv with Magical Copenhagen: Little Mermaid, which passes Amalienborg and the Stork Fountain on the way to the statue. Key Stage 3 groups can take Time Travelers Cronophone from Rosenborg Castle to the Round Tower, or The Conspiracy in the Royal District around Amalienborg and the Gefion Fountain. Hidden Vesterbro leads from København H through the old meat market district, and older pupils have a murder mystery in Indre By. Quests cover ages 8 to 18.

Teams, supervision and logistics

  • Teams and supervision

Teams of 3 to 5 pupils share one phone.

    MoreLess

For under-14s, have one adult per 2 to 3 teams with agreed checkpoints; for 14 to 18, follow your school's policy.

  • Getting around

    Walk the compact centre.

    MoreLess

On DOT buses, metro and trains each paying adult takes up to two under-12s free, and DOT's School Class Card covers 30 pupils and 3 adults for a year.

  • Toilets

Copenhagen's public toilets have been free since 2013, including one at Nørreport Station (open 8:00 to 22:00).

    MoreLess

They can be hard to find, so plan stops at libraries, museums and cafes.

  • Lunch

Kongens Have, the King's Garden beside Rosenborg Castle near Nørreport Station, is the classic central lawn for a packed lunch.

    MoreLess

Leave the grass as you found it and take litter away.

  • Wet weather

The National Museum is free for under-18s and the main library on Krystalgade is free to enter; the Glyptotek is free on the last Wednesday monthly.

    MoreLess

The quest can be replayed free within 30 days.

Caution: Copenhagen's busy cycle lanes sit between pavement and road, and visitors often mistake them for pavement. Brief teams to stay off them and check for bikes before crossing.

What they learn

History

Royal Copenhagen across several centuries, from Rosenborg Castle, the King's Garden and the Round Tower to the 18th-century royal quarter of Frederiksstaden, with Amalienborg, the Marble Church (Frederik's Church) and the Gefion Fountain. Copenhagen Cathedral and Gammeltorv cover the old civic and church centre.

Geography

Urban geography of a harbour capital (Nyhavn, Nordre Toldbod, Christianshavn) and of a changing district in Vesterbro, where Kødbyen and Øksnehallen sit in the former meat market area. Pupils practise map reading and orientation on routes of 1.5 to 5.4 km.

English and literature

Reading and following written instructions in English, and working with Hans Christian Andersen's The Little Mermaid alongside the Agnete and the Merman statue.

Citizenship and teamwork

Older pupils can discuss Christiania as a self-governing community. Every team shares out the jobs of navigator, reader and puzzle solver, and makes decisions together without an adult leading.

Teacher FAQ

Questions about Copenhagen

Which quest suits which age group?
For Key Stage 2 (ages 8 to 11), choose Magical Copenhagen: Little Mermaid or Hidden Vesterbro. For Key Stage 3, choose Time Travelers Cronophone, The Conspiracy in the Royal District or The Architect's Day Off. For Key Stage 4 and sixth form, choose the Indre By murder mystery or the Christiania quest, which we recommend only for pupils aged 14 and over because of its setting.
How long does a quest take?
App timings run from about 50 minutes (Christiania, 1.5 km) to about two hours (Time Travelers Cronophone, 4.3 km). Magical Copenhagen: Little Mermaid is listed at about an hour but covers 4.2 km, so allow more time with younger pupils. Hidden Vesterbro takes about an hour and a half. Teams can pause for toilets or lunch and carry on afterwards.
How many pupils per phone, and do pupils need accounts?
Each team of 3 to 5 pupils shares one phone, either a staff member's or a pupil's. Pupils do not need accounts. Each team phone needs mobile data on the day, or the quest downloaded on wifi beforehand. Charge the phones fully, and bring a power bank for the longer routes.
Where do we start and how do we get there?
Take the metro to Kongens Nytorv station (M1 to M4) for the Royal Danish Theatre start and Nyhavn. Christianshavn station (M1, M2) is near the Church of Our Saviour, where the Christiania quest starts. Hidden Vesterbro starts at København H. The Conspiracy in the Royal District starts at Amalienborg, the Queen's Palace, and The Architect's Day Off starts at the Round Tower.
How much does it cost?
It costs 5 euros per pupil, and teachers and accompanying adults play free. You can pay by card or by invoice. There is no booking slot, so teams can start whenever you arrive, and staff can preview any quest free from home before the trip.
What happens if it rains?
If the weather ruins the day, you can replay the quest free within 30 days. For a dry alternative, the National Museum on Ny Vestergade is free for under-18s and opens daily from 10:00 to 17:00. Adults pay 150 DKK, or 135 DKK each in a group of 10 or more. Torvehallerne at Israels Plads is a covered place to buy lunch.
Is Christiania suitable for a school group?
Christiania is a residential area, and cannabis has openly been sold on Pusher Street. Photographing Pusher Street is not tolerated, and residents should only be photographed with their permission. We have moved this quest to ages 14 to 18. Check current advice and your school's policy before you go, and brief pupils beforehand.
