About Statue of King Alfonso II of Asturias

The Statue of King Alfonso II of Asturias stands in Praza da Universidade in Santiago de Compostela and honours the king remembered as the founder of the pilgrimage to Santiago. Tradition names him the first pilgrim on the Way of St. James, which makes the monument a good starting point for understanding why the city exists at all.

The story behind it

According to tradition, the tomb of the Apostle James was discovered in the early 9th century, during the reign of Alfonso II of Asturias. The king is said to have ordered a church built over the tomb, and he is remembered as the first person to make the journey to it as a pilgrim.

That church later grew into a cathedral, and a settlement formed around it. As more pilgrims followed the Camino de Santiago, the settlement slowly became the city of Santiago de Compostela. From the Middle Ages, together with Rome and Jerusalem, it ranked among the most important Christian pilgrimage destinations. The statue puts a face on that origin story: the king who started it all.

What to look for

  • Look at how the king is presented, and read any plaque or inscription on or near the monument to see how the city chooses to remember him.
  • Notice the setting in Praza da Universidade, a square in the old town where university life and pilgrim history share the same streets.
  • Watch for pilgrims passing through with backpacks and scallop shells, a living echo of the journey the king is said to have begun.
  • Look up from the square and along the neighbouring streets for the dark granite buildings that give the old town its look.

Tips for your visit

  • The statue is outdoors in a public square, so you can stop whenever you pass. Ten minutes is plenty, longer if you want to sit and watch the square.
  • Morning is usually quieter, and late afternoon light is pleasant for photos. Santiago is known for rain, so a light jacket helps.
  • The cathedral and the main squares of the old town are a short walk away, so combine the statue with them rather than making a separate trip.
  • Pair it with a visit to the cathedral itself to follow the story from the king to the tomb. Check current opening hours before going inside.
