About East Pyne Hall

East Pyne Hall is a Collegiate Gothic building on the Princeton University campus in Princeton, New Jersey. It was completed in the 1890s as the university's main library and is one of the buildings that gives the central campus its stone-and-tower look. Today it is an academic building, best enjoyed from the outside and from the paths around it.

The story behind it

East Pyne Hall was designed by the architect William Appleton Potter and named for Moses Taylor Pyne, a Princeton trustee and benefactor who was a major supporter of the university's library and building projects. It opened at the end of the nineteenth century, when Princeton was building in the Gothic style that came to define its image as a campus.

For about half a century the building served as the library's home, holding the university's growing book collection. That role ended in the late 1940s, when Firestone Library opened and took over. East Pyne was then turned over to teaching and faculty offices, and it still houses academic departments, so it remains part of daily campus life rather than a museum.

What to look for

  • Look at the pointed arches, tall windows and stonework of the facade, which are classic features of the Collegiate Gothic style found across Princeton.
  • Notice the tower and the archway entrances, which make the building feel like a gateway between different parts of the central campus.
  • Scan the carved stone details around doorways and rooflines, where the Gothic decoration is easiest to appreciate up close.
  • Step back and compare East Pyne with the neighbouring buildings to see how the campus holds together as one architectural story.

Tips for your visit

  • Allow 15 to 20 minutes to look at the exterior and walk around it, longer if you are also exploring the nearby campus.
  • Morning or late afternoon light brings out the texture of the stone, and the paths are quieter outside class change times.
  • The building is in use for classes and offices, so check what is open to visitors and be considerate of students and staff.
  • It sits in the middle of the campus, so it combines easily with a longer walk through Princeton University and the town centre nearby.
