About Sofia Church

Sofia Church (Sofia kyrka) is a Neo-Gothic parish church on the hill of Södermalm in Stockholm, completed in 1906. It is named after Queen Sofia, wife of King Oscar II, and its tower is one of the landmarks of the island's skyline. It is a good anchor for a walk through one of the city's most characterful neighbourhoods.

The story behind it

The church was designed by the architect Gustaf Hermansson and finished in 1906, in the years when Södermalm was growing quickly and needed new places of worship. It carries the name of Queen Sofia of Nassau, the consort of Oscar II, who was King of Sweden and Norway at the time.

Today the church serves its parish but is also known as a venue for concerts and cultural events, which makes it part of everyday life on Södermalm and not only a sight to tick off. It stands among the streets and green spaces of the district that locals often call trendy, so the setting is as much part of the visit as the building.

What to look for

  • Look at the Neo-Gothic character of the building, with its pointed forms and vertical lines, and how the tower stands out above the surrounding rooftops.
  • Walk around the outside and notice how the church sits on the rising ground of Södermalm, so that its position matters as much as its design.
  • If the doors are open, step in and look up at the interior and the church windows, where the light changes through the day.
  • Watch for notice boards near the entrance, which often show upcoming concerts and events in the church.

Tips for your visit

  • Allow 20 to 30 minutes for the church itself, longer if you want to sit inside or catch a concert. Check current opening hours before you go, as access can vary.
  • Late morning or afternoon usually gives the best light on the exterior, and the streets around it are quieter on weekday mornings.
  • Södermalm is made for wandering, so combine the church with its nearby streets, parks and cafes rather than treating it as a single stop.
  • Wear comfortable shoes, as the island is hilly and the best views come with a bit of climbing.
