The Golden Bridge (Guldbron) is a bridge at Slussen in Stockholm that carries vehicles and pedestrians across the water between Gamla stan, the Old Town, and Södermalm. It stands on one of the city's oldest crossing points, where Lake Mälaren meets the Baltic inlet of Saltsjön, and it is part of the rebuilt Slussen area.

The story behind it

Slussen means "The Sluice", and the name goes back centuries. There has been a lock here since at least 1642, when the Queen Christina sluice was built, so this narrow channel has been busy with boats for nearly four hundred years. It has always tied the Old Town to Södermalm, and whatever crossing stood here shaped how people moved between the two.

The modern Golden Bridge continues that role. It was built in China and shipped all the way to Stockholm in 2020, then lifted into place as part of the large rebuilding of Slussen. Today it lets traffic and walkers cross the water and links the two historic halves of the city.

What to look for

• Stop at the middle of the bridge and look at the water below, where the level of Mälaren and the sea is managed through the lock, the reason this place exists.
• Look toward Gamla stan to see the Old Town's waterfront, with its tightly packed buildings and church spires rising behind them.
• Turn the other way to see the cliffs and houses of Södermalm rising above the water.
• Notice how the new construction around Slussen sits against the older layers of the area, a good way to read how the district keeps changing.

Tips for your visit

• Plan 10 to 15 minutes for the bridge itself, longer if you want to stop for photos and the views.
• Crossing it is free and it is open air, so you can walk over any time. Expect traffic, so keep to the pedestrian side.
• Late afternoon and early evening usually give soft light over the water and the Old Town.
• Gamla stan is a short walk on one side and the streets of Södermalm on the other, so it works well as a link between the two areas.
