CENTAURUS STATUE
About CENTAURUS STATUE
The Centaurus Statue, a striking modern addition to the ancient ruins of Pompeii, stands prominently in the Forum, the heart of the once-thriving Roman city. Created by contemporary Polish artist Igor Mitoraj, this bronze sculpture was installed in 2013 as part of an exhibition that brought a collection of Mitoraj’s works to Pompeii. The Centaurus Statue has since become a permanent fixture, offering a fascinating juxtaposition between the ancient world and modern art.
Located in the Forum, the political, religious, and social center of Pompeii, the Centaurus Statue dominates the open space, with Mount Vesuvius looming in the background. The statue depicts a centaur, a mythical creature with the upper body of a man and the lower body of a horse, symbolizing the duality of human nature and the struggle between civilization and wildness. The figure’s torso is fragmented, a characteristic of Mitoraj’s style, evoking themes of decay and the passage of time—fitting for a city frozen in its final moments by the eruption of Vesuvius.
What makes the Centaurus Statue unique is its contemporary artistry set against the backdrop of an ancient city, creating a powerful dialogue between the past and present. The statue’s weathered appearance and classical references blend seamlessly with the ruins, making it a thought-provoking addition to Pompeii’s historical landscape.
The best time to visit the Centaurus Statue is early in the morning or late in the afternoon when the sunlight casts dramatic shadows across the Forum, enhancing the sculpture’s presence. Pompeii can be crowded, especially during peak tourist season from April to October, so visiting during off-peak hours or the shoulder seasons can provide a more intimate experience. A ticket is required to enter the Pompeii archaeological site, which includes access to the Forum and the Centaurus Statue. Tickets can be purchased online or at the entrance.
An interesting fact about the Centaurus Statue is that it was part of Mitoraj’s larger exhibition in Pompeii, which included several other sculptures that temporarily dotted the ancient landscape. While these other works have since been removed, the Centaurus Statue remains, symbolizing the enduring impact of art across millennia.
Though not featured in any major films, the Centaurus Statue has been widely photographed and featured in art and travel publications, cementing its place as a modern icon in an ancient setting. Visiting this statue offers a unique perspective on Pompeii, where ancient ruins and contemporary art converge in a timeless conversation.
