About Koïfhus

Built in 1480, the Koïfhus (also known as Ancienne Douane) is a Gothic-Renaissance building situated in Colmar’s old town. Strategically located at the intersection of two major medieval trade routes, it served as a customs house (taxing imported goods on the ground floor) and a political meeting hall (hosting the Décapole alliance upstairs). The building is most notable for its Renaissance turret and arcaded façade, and also marks the birthplace of the famous Napoleonic general - Jean Rapp (1771), who  was given the command of V Corps consisting of about 20,000 men, and who saved Napoleon's life multiple times.

Over the centuries, it narrowly escaped demolition in the 1800s before being restored in the late 19th century. Today, the it is listed as a monument historique (since 1930) and houses exhibitions, cultural events, and even a restaurant.
