Belogradchik Fortress is a stronghold in the town of Belogradchik, in northwest Bulgaria, built into and between towering rock formations. Its origins go back to Roman times, and it was used and expanded by later rulers over many centuries. Today it is one of the most dramatic places in the country to walk, because stone walls and natural cliffs merge into one.

The story behind it

The fortress was first built around the 1st to 3rd century, when this land belonged to the Roman Empire. Its builders made clever use of the rock formations that rise from the hillside, so the cliffs act as part of the walls. After the Roman Empire was divided in 395, the Balkan lands passed to Byzantium, and later the region became part of the Bulgarian state. In the 14th century the fortress was an important fortification in this part of the northwest.

It was strengthened again under Ottoman rule in the early 19th century, and it stayed a place of military importance. In 1850 an uprising against Ottoman rule broke out in the Belogradchik area. The fortress was a key point of control in the region, which is why it features so strongly in the story of that struggle.

What to look for

• Look at how the walls and gates connect directly with the red rock, so that in places you cannot tell where the cliff ends and the masonry begins.
• Climb to the upper terraces and viewpoints for a wide look over the Belogradchik Rocks, with their strange towers and figures rising above the trees.
• Try to spot the rock shapes that locals have given names, such as figures that look like a monk, a horseman or a pair of people.
• Notice the courtyards and defensive platforms, and picture how a small garrison could watch the valley and the roads below.

Tips for your visit

• Allow about one to two hours inside, more if you like photography or want to pause at every viewpoint.
• Wear shoes with good grip, as the stone steps and paths are steep and can be uneven, especially after rain.
• Late afternoon is a lovely time to go, when the low sun brings out the colour of the rocks. Check current opening hours and entry details before you set out.
• The fortress sits right above the town, so you can combine it with a walk through the streets and the rock formations around it.
