About La fábrica de los sueños
La fábrica de los sueños (The Dream Factory) sits at Plaça Ferrándiz i Carbonell, in a part of Alcoi where the city's industrial past is written into the very buildings.
The Ferrándiz and Carbonell factories are among the most important examples of industrial architecture in the Valencian Community. Carbonell's factory was built between 1909 and 1917, and Ferrándiz's followed in 1922, later refurbished in 1942 by architect Joaquín Aracil Aznar. These buildings once powered Alcoi's textile and manufacturing industries, which made the town a driving force of Spain's Industrial Revolution.
Today, the former factories have been repurposed as part of the Polytechnic University, transforming from centres of industrial production into centres of learning. It's a fitting second act for buildings that helped shape the region's economy.
Alcoi's industrial heritage is one of its defining features. The town's appearance still reflects its pioneering past, and it has been included on the European Modernist Route for the quality of its architecture from this era.
If you're on a Questo quest through Alcoi, this square and its repurposed factories are the kind of place where the past is hiding in plain sight. The details of these buildings might hold more than meets the eye.
