About The Battistero di San Giovanni

The Baptistery of St John (Battistero di San Giovanni) stands on Piazza del Duomo in Pisa, opposite the west front of the cathedral. It is the largest baptistery in Italy, a round marble building begun in 1152 and finished well over a century later. It is part of the Piazza dei Miracoli, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, and is known for its two-part design and its remarkable acoustics.

The story behind it

Pisa was a rich maritime power in the Middle Ages, and the buildings on this square were meant to show it. The baptistery was begun in 1152, after the cathedral had already been under way for decades. It was built in two stages: the lower part is in the rounded Pisan Romanesque style, while the upper levels and the outer dome added later bring in Gothic touches. That long building period explains why the building mixes two styles.

Inside, a dome sits within the outer dome, and the hollow space this creates gives the room a striking echo. Attendants sing a few notes from time to time to show how voices carry and linger. Nearby, between the baptistery and the cathedral, lies the Camposanto, the monumental cemetery. Legend says its earth was brought by ship from Golgotha during the Crusades, a story Pisans have told for centuries.

What to look for

  • The change of style as your eye moves upward: plain round arches at the base, then pointed Gothic gables and pinnacles higher up.
  • The carved decoration around the main doorway, which faces the cathedral, and the sculpted figures along the upper levels.
  • The octagonal font in the middle of the floor and the freestanding marble pulpit by Nicola Pisano inside.
  • The slight lean of the building itself, which is easier to notice when you stand back and compare it with the cathedral beside it.

Tips for your visit

  • Allow 30 to 45 minutes if you go inside, and a little more if you also want to walk around the whole square.
  • Go early in the morning or late in the afternoon for softer light on the marble and fewer tour groups.
  • Stay for a demonstration of the acoustics if one begins while you are inside; it is the best moment of the visit.
  • The cathedral, the Camposanto and the Leaning Tower are all within a few steps. Check current opening hours and ticket arrangements before you go.
