About Angiolina Park
Angiolina Park is a historic seaside park in Opatija, on the Kvarner coast of Croatia, laid out around Villa Angiolina, built in 1844. It is often seen as the place where Opatija's story as a resort began, and today it is a shady green stop between the town centre and the sea.
The story behind it
In 1844 the wealthy merchant Iginio Scarpa built a villa here and named it Angiolina, in memory of his late wife. He surrounded it with a garden of exotic plants brought from far afield, and the villa and its grounds drew visitors who came to see both the house and the plants. This is why many people date Opatija's rise from a quiet fishing village to a fashionable seaside retreat to this spot.
The garden grew into the public park you walk through today, with a mix of Mediterranean and imported trees and shrubs. The villa now houses the Croatian Museum of Tourism, which tells the story of how the town changed from a small coastal settlement into a destination.
What to look for
- Villa Angiolina itself, the elegant house at the heart of the park, which started the town's tourist story.
- The unusual trees and shrubs along the paths, many of them species that do not grow naturally on this coast.
- The tall palms, which give the park its southern, almost theatrical look against the sea air.
- The sea edge of the park, where paths lead toward the waterfront promenade and the bay beyond.
Tips for your visit
- Allow 30 to 60 minutes for an unhurried stroll, longer if you also visit the museum in the villa.
- Morning and late afternoon are the most pleasant times, with softer light and more shade underfoot.
- The park sits right by the seafront, so it combines easily with a walk along the coastal promenade and a look at the town's grand old buildings.
- Check current opening hours for the museum inside the villa before you plan to go in.
See it on a quest
The park is one of the places you reach on Opatija: The Last Queen Before Rome, a self-guided walk through the area. You walk to it as one stop on a longer route, the app tells you about the place as you arrive, and you solve a puzzle based on what is in front of you. It starts whenever you like, with no guide and no group to join, and one ticket covers the whole group.
