About Monument aux Morts

At the foot of Château Hill, this Art Deco war memorial honors those from Nice who died in World War I. Designed by Roger Séassal in 1924, the 32-meter-high monument features an enormous urn set into carved stone. Five steps lead to the niche, each representing the years 1914-1918. The sculptural work is austere yet powerful, reflecting early 20th-century monumentality. Seascal was a Grand Prix de Rome winner, and his design shows architectural sophistication applied to collective grief. With Questo, you can explore how cities memorialize loss and transform trauma into enduring monuments.
