The American Museum of Natural History is one of the largest museums in the world, occupying 25 interconnected buildings spread across four city blocks on the Upper West Side of Manhattan. It has been a New York institution since 1869.

The museum was founded by Albert Smith Bickmore, a zoologist who convinced a group of prominent New Yorkers, including Theodore Roosevelt Sr. (father of the future president), to support his vision. The collection is staggering: more than 34 million specimens and artifacts, from a 94-foot blue whale model hanging in the Hall of Ocean Life to the 563-carat Star of India sapphire in the Morgan Memorial Hall of Gems. The Hans Christian Andersen Monument sits on the west side of Conservatory Water in Central Park, depicting the Danish fairy tale author with an open book on his knee and his most famous creation, the Ugly Duckling, at his feet.

The "Greensward Plan" transformed a landscape of rocky outcrops, swamps, and squatter settlements into what Olmsted called a "democratic recreation ground."

The park contains 21 playgrounds, 36 bridges and arches (each unique), 9,000 benches, and the Jacqueline Kennedy Onassis Reservoir. There are also the Central Park Zoo, Belvedere Castle (a Victorian folly that serves as a weather station), and Bethesda Terrace with its Angel of the Waters fountain.

What most visitors don't realize is that nearly everything in Central Park is artificial. The "natural" landscape was entirely engineered. Even the outcrops of Manhattan schist were arranged to look naturally scattered.

The Angel of the Waters fountain, dedicated in 1873, is one of the most recognizable sculptures in New York. It was created by Emma Stebbins, making it the first major public artwork in the city to be commissioned from a woman. The arcade beneath the upper terrace features over 15,000 Minton encaustic tiles on the ceiling, designed by Mould and manufactured in England. Strawberry Fields is a quiet, landscaped section of Central Park dedicated to the memory of John Lennon, who was shot and killed outside his home at the Dakota apartment building on December 8, 1980. The memorial is directly across the street from where he lived and died.

The 2.5-acre area was officially dedicated on October 9, 1985, what would have been Lennon's 45th birthday. It was designed by landscape architect Bruce Kelly and funded by Yoko Ono, who contributed over $1 million to the project.

The centrepiece is a circular mosaic pathway with the word "Imagine" at its centre, a reference to Lennon's most famous solo song. The mosaic was a gift from the city of Naples, Italy, made with tiles from the same workshops that produce traditional Neapolitan mosaics.

The memorial is designated an International Garden of Peace, and more than 160 countries donated plants, trees, and stones. The area is planted with a deliberately naturalistic design, creating a sense of seclusion within the park.

Construction began in 1931, during the Great Depression, and the core complex was completed by 1939 at a cost of about $250 million (roughly $1.7 billion today). The project was originally planned as the new home of the Metropolitan Opera, but when the Opera withdrew, John D. Rockefeller Jr. pressed forward alone, creating a "city within a city."

The center is famous for several things: the annual Christmas tree lighting (a tradition since 1931), the ice-skating rink, the Today Show studios, and Radio City Music Hall, which opened in 1932 as the world's largest indoor theatre. The complex also contains one of the most significant collections of public Art Deco artwork in the world, including murals, sculptures, and reliefs throughout the buildings and plazas.

The original 30 Rockefeller Plaza, now known as 30 Rock, is home to NBC Studios and features the Top of the Rock observation deck on the 70th floor, with 360-degree views of Manhattan including the Empire State Building and Central Park.

Rockefeller Center

Grand Central Terminal is one of the world's most famous train stations and one of New York City's most visited landmarks. It opened on February 2, 1913, at 12:01 AM, and 150,000 people showed up on the first day to see it.

The terminal was built after a catastrophic train collision in the Park Avenue Tunnel in 1902 that killed 17 people and injured 38. The disaster forced the railroad to switch from steam to electric trains and build a new station to accommodate them. The result was Grand Central, designed by the architectural firms Reed & Stem and Warren & Wetmore in the Beaux-Arts style.

The Main Concourse is the building's crown jewel: a vast hall with a ceiling painted to resemble the night sky, with 2,500 stars picked out in gold leaf and lit from behind. There's a deliberate mistake in the design: the constellations are painted backward, as if seen from outside the celestial sphere. The New York Public Library's main branch, the Stephen A. Schwarzman Building, is one of the most magnificent public buildings in the United States. The building was designed by Carrere & Hastings in the Beaux-Arts style and took 10 years to build, rising on the site of the old Croton Reservoir. The two stone lions flanking the entrance are named "Patience" and "Fortitude," nicknames given by Mayor Fiorello La Guardia during the Great Depression as qualities New Yorkers needed to endure hard times.

Inside, the Rose Main Reading Room is the building's crown jewel: a 78-foot-long hall with 52-foot ceilings, painted with murals of cloudy skies, and lit by grand chandeliers. The room can seat 500 readers and has been a workspace for some of the most important writers, scholars, and thinkers of the past century.

The library holds more than 53 million items, including a Gutenberg Bible, an original Declaration of Independence draft, and Christopher Columbus's 1493 letter announcing the discovery of the New World.

The Chrysler Building is one of the most beloved skyscrapers in the world and a masterpiece of Art Deco design. Rising 1,048 feet above Lexington Avenue in midtown Manhattan, it has been a defining feature of the New York skyline since 1930.

The building was designed by William Van Alen for Walter P. Chrysler, who funded the construction personally (not with company money) so he could pass it to his children. It was completed in a race with the competing Bank of Manhattan Trust Building at 40 Wall Street to become the world's tallest building.

Van Alen won through a spectacular trick. He secretly obtained a permit for a 125-foot steel spire, which was assembled inside the building's crown. On October 23, 1929, the spire was lifted through the top and riveted into place in just 90 minutes, pushing the building past its rival. The Chrysler Building held the title of world's tallest for 11 months before the Empire State Building surpassed it in 1931.

The building's exterior details celebrate the automobile age: eagle gargoyles on the 61st floor (based on Chrysler hood ornaments), hubcap-inspired decorations on the 31st floor, and the iconic stainless-steel crown with its radiating arches and triangular windows.

The lobby is open to the public on weekdays and is one of the finest Art Deco interiors in the world, with red African marble, ornate elevator doors, and a ceiling mural depicting transportation and industry.

Chrysler Building

Washington Square Arch is a white marble triumphal arch standing at the northern end of Washington Square Park, marking the southern terminus of Fifth Avenue. It's one of the most recognized landmarks in Greenwich Village.

The arch started as a temporary structure. In 1889, a plaster and wood arch was erected to celebrate the centennial of George Washington's inauguration. It proved so popular that a campaign was launched to build a permanent version. Architect Stanford White designed the marble replacement, and the cornerstone was laid on May 30, 1890, "Decoration Day" (now Memorial Day). The arch was formally dedicated on May 4, 1895.

Built from Tuckahoe marble, the arch stands 77 feet tall with an opening 47 feet high. The design was inspired by the Arch of Titus in Rome. Two statues of George Washington flank the north face: one shows him as a military commander, the other as the first president.

In January 1917, a group of artists and writers, including Marcel Duchamp, climbed a staircase inside the arch (which is now sealed), reached the top, and declared Greenwich Village an independent republic, the "Free and Independent Republic of Washington Square." The stunt captured the neighbourhood's rebellious spirit perfectly.

Washington Square Arch

The Elmer Holmes Bobst Library is the flagship of New York University's library system and one of the most striking modernist buildings in Greenwich Village. Rising 12 storeys above Washington Square South, it holds the heart of NYU's collection of nearly 6 million volumes.

The library was designed by Philip Johnson and Richard Foster and completed in 1972. It was funded by a $11.5 million donation from Elmer Holmes Bobst, a pharmaceutical industry magnate who was a personal friend and advisor to President Richard Nixon.

The building's most dramatic feature is its interior atrium, a vast open space surrounded by tiers of balconies that rise through all 12 floors. The atrium was designed to flood the building with natural light, and the effect is striking from any level.

Before the Bobst Library was built, NYU's collections were scattered across multiple buildings on the Washington Square campus. The new library consolidated everything under one roof, creating a central hub for academic life.

The library is primarily for NYU students and faculty, but visitors can sometimes access the lobby and ground-floor exhibition spaces. It sits just south of Washington Square Park, next to the Washington Square Arch.

NYU Elmer Holmes Bobst Library

The Cherry Lane Theatre is the oldest continuously running off-Broadway theatre in New York City, tucked into a quiet bend of Commerce Street in Greenwich Village.

The building dates to 1817, when it was a farm silo. Over the years it served as a brewery, a tobacco warehouse, and a box factory before being converted into a playhouse in 1924. The conversion was led by a group that included poet Edna St. Vincent Millay, one of the most celebrated writers of the 1920s.

Since then, the Cherry Lane has been a launchpad for some of the most important voices in American theatre. Samuel Beckett, Edward Albee, Harold Pinter, and David Mamet all had works staged here. The intimate 179-seat space has a reputation for producing bold, experimental work that larger theatres won't touch.

In 2023, the film studio A24 purchased the theatre for around $10 million, and after renovations it reopened in September 2025. The venue continues to host new plays, revivals, and experimental work.

The Fiorello H. LaGuardia Monument is a bronze sculpture in LaGuardia Place Gardens in Greenwich Village, depicting one of New York City's most beloved mayors in characteristic mid-stride, gesticulating and talking, exactly as he was in life.

The statue was created by sculptor Neil Estern and installed in 1994. It captures LaGuardia's famous energy and theatricality. Fiorello LaGuardia served as mayor from 1934 to 1945 and is widely considered one of the greatest mayors in American history. He was the son of an Italian immigrant father and an Italian-Jewish mother, and he grew up to become the first Italian-American member of Congress.

LaGuardia was born on December 11, 1882, at 177 Sullivan Street, just blocks from where his statue now stands. His time as mayor saw the construction of public housing, playgrounds, and infrastructure that transformed the city. He was also famous for reading the Sunday comics aloud on the radio during a newspaper strike so children wouldn't miss their favourite strips.

The statue sits in LaGuardia Place Gardens, between Bleecker Street and West 3rd Street, surrounded by the neighbourhood where he grew up.
