The St. Lawrence River made this area central to Montréal’s growth as a port, but the city’s story did not begin with European settlement. Indigenous peoples used and inhabited the island long before Ville-Marie was founded in 1642. This quest follows the historic riverfront and Old Montréal while recognizing those layered histories rather than presenting the port as the city’s single origin story.
