The mission: Your story in Melbourne

Melbourne's Fitzroy and Treasury Gardens have been a refuge from the city since the 1850s.

Beneath the elms and along the winding paths, layers of history wait quietly to be discovered: monuments to poets and presidents, a cottage carried halfway around the world, trees scarred by Aboriginal hands long before Europeans arrived.

These gardens hold stories from many different worlds.

Scottish settlers, English gift-givers, First Nations peoples, a children's artist working by lamplight, and a retired craftsman building a miniature village in cement have all left their mark here.

Each spot you visit connects to a wider web of journeys, arrivals, and acts of care.

This walk is an invitation to slow down and pay attention. There is more here than a pleasant green space.

There are hidden details carved into bark, cast in bronze, and pressed into ceramic tiles beneath your feet.

Take your time, look closely, and enjoy discovering Melbourne's gardens in a whole new way.

Melbourne garden context

Two 19th-century gardens shaped by the growing city

Fitzroy Gardens and Treasury Gardens developed as Melbourne expanded during the 19th century, providing planned green space beside government buildings and new residential streets. Their paths, trees and monuments reflect changing ideas about public recreation and civic display. This quest turns the connected landscape into a secret walk without inventing one hidden historical plot. Playable languages: English.

A nice day out in Fitzroy Gardens and Treasury Gardens. There’s some interesting history to discover. It’s not enough to keep a six year old boy engaged but the eight year old girl learnt a few things along the way.
