About Beverly Hills City Hall
Beverly Hills City Hall is the Spanish Colonial Revival civic building at 402 N Crescent Dr in Beverly Hills, the small independent city surrounded by Los Angeles. Completed in the early 1930s, it is known for its tiled dome and tower, which make it one of the most recognisable buildings in the area. It is an easy, free stop on foot, close to the city's best-known shopping streets.
The story behind it
Beverly Hills grew quickly in the 1920s as film people and wealthy buyers settled in the hills north of Wilshire Boulevard. By the end of that decade the city wanted a civic building to match its status. The result was this City Hall, designed by architect William J. Gage and finished in 1932, in the Spanish-influenced style that defined much of Southern California architecture between the wars.
The building shows how the region imagined itself in those years: whitewashed walls, red tile and ornate decoration borrowed from Spain and Mexico, set under a bright sky. It has been added to over the decades as the city's government grew, but the original tower still anchors the civic centre and appears in many photographs of the city.
What to look for
- The tower and its tiled dome, which rise above the roofline and are the easiest way to spot the building from nearby streets.
- The Spanish Colonial Revival details on the facade, including the arched openings, decorative stonework and the contrast of pale walls and red roof tile.
- The way the older building sits among later civic buildings, so you can compare the 1930s design with the newer additions around it.
- The landscaped grounds and plazas around the building, which give a good angle for photographs of the dome against the sky.
Tips for your visit
- Ten to twenty minutes is enough to walk around the exterior and take photographs. Allow longer if you combine it with the surrounding streets.
- Morning and late afternoon give the softest light on the pale walls and tile. Midday sun can flatten the details.
- This is a working government building, so check current opening hours before planning to go inside, and be respectful of staff and visitors.
- Rodeo Drive and Beverly Gardens Park are a short walk away, so it fits well into a wider stroll through Beverly Hills.
See it on a quest
City Hall is a good place to start looking closely at a neighbourhood rather than just passing through it. The Oz Escape in Los Angeles is a self-guided, Oz-themed walk that passes this building as one stop on a longer route through the area. The app tells you about each place as you reach it, and you solve a puzzle based on what is in front of you. It is a paid quest, and one ticket covers the whole group. You can start whenever suits you, with no guide and no set departure time.
