Arco da Rua Augusta, Lisbon — Visitor Guide & Things to Do Nearby
About Arco da Rua Augusta
The Arco da Rua Augusta is Lisbon's answer to the triumphal arches of ancient Rome, but with a uniquely Portuguese twist. Standing at the northern edge of Praca do Comercio, this neoclassical arch marks the formal gateway between the grand plaza and the bustling pedestrian shopping street of Rua Augusta. Originally designed in 1775 as part of Lisbon's post-earthquake reconstruction, the arch was not completed until 1875, making it a project that spanned a full century of Portuguese ambition.
The sculptural program crowning the arch tells the story of Portugal's national character. At the very top stands the figure of Glory, holding two crowns symbolizing victory and honor, flanked by figures of Valor and Genius representing Portuguese strength and wisdom. Below, statues of four historical figures embody different eras of Portuguese greatness: Viriatus, leader of the ancient Lusitanian resistance against Rome; Nuno Alvares Pereira, medieval military hero; Vasco da Gama, the navigator who reached India by sea; and the Marquis of Pombal, architect of Lisbon's reconstruction.
For many years the arch's interior was closed to visitors, but since 2013 you can climb to the top for breathtaking panoramic views of the Tagus River, Praca do Comercio, and the Baixa district. At just 4.50 euros for adults, it is one of Lisbon's best-value viewpoints. Questo's adventures through the Baixa take you through this arch with stories that transform a simple walk down Rua Augusta into a journey through Portuguese history.
