About Zion Square
Zion Square (Kikar Tzion) is a public square in the centre of downtown Jerusalem, where Jaffa Street meets the pedestrian Ben Yehuda Street. It has long been the place where the modern city outside the Old City walls comes together, and it remains a popular meeting point for locals and visitors alike.
The story behind it
Jerusalem's downtown grew up outside the Old City walls from the late nineteenth century, and Jaffa Street became its main artery, linking the Old City with the newer neighbourhoods to the west. Zion Square sits at a key junction on that route, and over time it turned into the natural crossroads of the commercial centre.
Today the square is less a monument than a living stage. It is where several streets meet, where people arrange to meet friends, and where the rhythm of the city is easiest to feel, from morning commuters to the evening crowd heading for the cafes and bars nearby.
What to look for
- Look at where Ben Yehuda Street begins at the square: it is a pedestrian street lined with shops, cafes and street performers.
- Notice the Jerusalem stone used on many of the surrounding buildings, which gives the downtown its warm, pale look in the afternoon light.
- Watch the light rail running along Jaffa Street nearby, a modern layer on one of the city's oldest routes.
- Pay attention to the crowd itself, since the square is a good place to see how many different parts of Jerusalem life cross paths.
Tips for your visit
- You only need 10 to 20 minutes for the square itself, but allow more if you plan to stroll Ben Yehuda Street or stop for a coffee.
- It is open to everyone at any time and there is nothing to go inside, so it fits easily between other sights.
- Evenings are lively, while Shabbat is much quieter and many businesses close, so check current opening hours if you plan to shop or eat.
- From here, Jaffa Street leads toward the Old City and the Mahane Yehuda Market, both reachable on foot or by light rail.
