The Historical Gate of Istanbul University is the monumental entrance to the university's main campus on Beyazıt Square, in Istanbul's Fatih district. It stands between the Grand Bazaar, Beyazıt Mosque and the Süleymaniye hills, and it is one of the best-known meeting points in the old city.

The story behind it

The gate opens onto grounds that belong to one of Turkey's best-known universities. The large building behind it was raised in the nineteenth century as the Ottoman War Ministry and later became home to the university. Its grand scale still reads as a statement of state power rather than of academic calm.

The square in front of it has a much longer past. It lies over the site of the Byzantine Forum of Theodosius, and it takes its present name from the nearby Beyazıt Mosque, one of the early imperial mosques of the city. Inside the campus, the tall white Beyazıt Tower began life as a fire lookout, a reminder of how often fires swept through the wooden city.

What to look for

• The size and proportions of the gateway itself, a formal entrance that clearly belongs to a government building before a place of study.
• The Beyazıt Tower rising above the trees inside the grounds, easiest to spot when you look through and past the gate.
• The dome and courtyard side of Beyazıt Mosque across the square, which shows how Ottoman and later buildings share the same open space.
• The everyday life of the square: students crossing between lectures, people meeting under the gate, and street sellers close to the bazaar.

Tips for your visit

• Allow 15 to 30 minutes for the gate and the square, longer if you combine them with the mosque and the bazaar.
• Go in the morning for softer light and fewer crowds, and for the busiest student atmosphere during term time.
• Entry to the campus can be restricted, so check current access rules before planning to walk inside.
• The Beyazıt-Kapalıçarşı tram stop is close by, and the Grand Bazaar, the old book market and the Süleymaniye Mosque are all within a short walk.
