About St. Luzia

Santa Luzia in Funchal is a small garden laid out on the site of a former sugar mill and rum distillery. It keeps the machinery and chimney of Madeira's sugar-cane industry in the middle of the city, which makes it a quiet place to read about how the island once made its living.

The story behind it

The story starts in 1845, when William Hinton founded a distillery here that turned sugar cane juice into rum. Sugar had long shaped Madeira's economy, and the Hinton works grew into one of the island's best-known cane-processing sites, adopting new industrial equipment as the 19th century went on.

Production eventually wound down, and the factory closed in 1986. In 2004 the old mill grounds reopened as the Santa Luzia Garden, with the aim of keeping the industrial past visible instead of clearing it away. Old cogwheels and a tall chimney were kept, so the garden doubles as a small open-air museum of the mill.

What to look for

  • The preserved cogwheels, which give a sense of the scale of the machinery that once crushed and processed the cane.
  • The mill chimney, which rises above the surrounding buildings and can be spotted from other parts of Funchal.
  • The contrast between planted greenery and the leftover industrial structures, which shows how the site was reshaped from factory to public space.
  • The way the site sits among the streets of the city, a reminder that sugar and rum were once made in the middle of town and not on the outskirts.

Tips for your visit

  • Allow 20 to 30 minutes for the garden itself, longer if you like reading about industrial history or taking photographs.
  • Go in the morning or late afternoon, when the light is softer and the walk through town is more comfortable.
  • Combine it with a wander through nearby parts of Funchal, since it is easy to reach on foot from the old town area.
  • Check current access arrangements before you go, as gardens and heritage sites can change how they open.
