Meet the maker

The mission: Your story in Warsaw

It is 1936, and you are Jan Alter, a Jewish smith living in Muranów.

One evening, walking home through familiar streets, you notice a woman standing very still on the corner. She raises her hand and points directly at you. Then she begins to recite:

The darkest years shall soon begin
The darkest years the world has seen
The lord has asked to save your soul
To spare thee angst is now my goal
I'll count to three and you'll be safe
In ninety years must you be brave
And if you can't escape remorse
Here's your time turner , a pink horse

The street tilts. The lights blur. You feel the cobblestones leave your feet.

When you open your eyes, it is 2020. You are still in Muranów. But Muranów is gone.

Post-war Warsaw

A time-machine story in a district transformed by war and rebuilding

Muranów was profoundly transformed by the destruction of Warsaw during the Second World War and by post-war rebuilding. More broadly, Warsaw’s historic centre was reconstructed as an extraordinary act of cultural survival after near-total wartime destruction. The pink horse and time machine are fictional; the district’s changing layers of memory are real. Playable languages: English.
