Frequently asked questions

Is this a self-guided walking tour of Hanoi's Old Quarter?
Not quite. The route centres on the Ba Đình area rather than the Old Quarter lanes, taking in the Temple of Literature, the Imperial Citadel of Thăng Long, the North Gate, Quán Thánh Temple, Ba Đình Square and the One Pillar Pagoda. You play it on your phone, with no guide, whenever you like.
Where does the walk start and finish?
It starts at the Temple of Literature and finishes at the One Pillar Pagoda (Chùa Một Cột), so it is not a loop. In between you pass the Fine Arts Museum, Lenin Park, the Hanoi Flagtower, the Imperial Citadel, Cửa Bắc Church, the Presidential Palace and Ba Đình Square.
How long does it take and can we pause?
Most players take close to three hours to cover the 4.8 km, including walking, hearing the stories and solving the puzzles. You can pause at any point, stop for a drink or a rest, and continue later from where you left off.
Is it suitable for children and for groups?
It is tagged family friendly and fun to do as a couple, and it is free to play, so friends and families can all join in. It suits school-age children who can walk nearly 5 km and enjoy looking closely at buildings and monuments to crack puzzles.
Do we need to book a time?
No. There is no group to join and no set departure, so you can start at the Temple of Literature whenever you are ready. Most of the route is walked outdoors between stops, so check the weather and bring water or an umbrella.
