About The Golden Rider's Legacy

The Golden Rider (Goldener Reiter) is a gilded equestrian statue of Augustus the Strong, Elector of Saxony and King of Poland, standing on Neustädter Markt in Dresden. It is one of the city's best-known monuments and sits at the entrance to the Neustadt, on the north bank of the Elbe.

The story behind it

The statue was commissioned to honour August the Strong, but he died in 1733, before it was finished and put up. It shows him in Roman dress, like an emperor of antiquity, and it faces east toward Poland, a nod to the two crowns he held, Saxony and Poland. Its position at the gateway to the Neustadt also fits his ambition to turn this district into a grand baroque quarter.

The Rider is not solid gold. It is made of copper and covered in a layer of gilding. In the Second World War it was taken apart and stored as a precaution, so it was out of harm's way when the bombing of 1945 destroyed much of the old city. It was later returned to its place on the square.

What to look for

  • Look at the Roman costume: August is shown as an ancient commander rather than a king in contemporary court dress.
  • Notice which way the horse and rider face, east toward Poland, and think about why the sculptor chose that direction.
  • Watch how the gilded surface catches the light, especially when the sun is low, and how it stands out against the stone around it.
  • Look down Hauptstraße, the broad street that starts right behind the statue, to get a feel for the baroque town plan the king had in mind.

Tips for your visit

  • The statue stands in the open on a public square, so you can see it any time at no cost. Ten to fifteen minutes is enough for a good look.
  • Late afternoon and early evening usually give the warmest light on the gilding.
  • The Blockhaus, the Hauptstraße and the Augustus Bridge over the Elbe are all close by, so it is easy to combine with a walk through the Neustadt.
  • For a different angle, walk across the bridge toward the old town and look back at the skyline; check current opening hours for any museum or cafe you plan to visit nearby.
