About St. Michael's Church, Cluj-Napoca

St. Michael's Church is a Gothic Roman Catholic church on Piața Unirii, the main square of Cluj-Napoca in Transylvania. It is the square's dominant building, and the equestrian statue of King Matthias Corvinus stands right in front of it. Together they make the best-known view in the city and the place where most walks through the old centre begin.

The story behind it

Building began in the 14th century and the church took generations to finish, which is why it is counted among the great Gothic churches of Transylvania. Its tall neo-Gothic tower is a 19th-century addition. The church stands in what was once the city's commercial heart. The square was long known as the Big Market, and later carried the names Main Square and King Matthias Square before it became Piața Unirii, a name that recalls the union of Transylvania with Romania in 1918.

The statue in front of the church adds its own story. Made in Budapest and brought to Cluj by train, it shows King Matthias on horseback, with four figures at his feet: Blasiu Magyar, Pavel Chinezu, Stefan Zapolya and Stefan Bathory. The monument has long been a point of debate, since people read it differently depending on whether they see Matthias as a Hungarian or a Romanian-born king. A replica of a trilingual plaque on the monument was put back in 1992 after the original was destroyed under the Communists. Local people still arrange to meet "at the horse's tail", behind the statue.

What to look for

  • The neo-Gothic tower rises high above the square, and you can see it from many of the streets around the old centre.
  • The pointed arches and tall windows of the nave show the church's Gothic character, especially from the side facing the square.
  • The four figures around Matthias on the monument are worth a close look, as each is a historical figure from his world.
  • The shape of the square itself is a clue to its past: it is large and open because it was a medieval market, with the church rising from the middle of the space.

Tips for your visit

  • Allow about 20 to 30 minutes for the church and the statue, longer if you sit at a café on the square.
  • Early morning and late afternoon give softer light on the facade and fewer people around the statue.
  • The church is still a place of worship, so dress modestly, keep your voice low and check current opening hours and service times before going inside.
  • The streets around the square are full of other sights, so it works well as the start or the middle of a walk through the old town.
