Is there a self-guided walking tour app for the old town of The Hague?
Yes. This city game runs on your phone and leads you through ten stops in the old town, from Escher in Het Paleis to The New Church. At each place the app tells its story and sets a puzzle based on what is in front of you. There is no guide and no fixed start time.
Where does the walk start and finish?
It starts at Escher in Het Paleis and finishes at The New Church, so it does not end where it began. In between you pass the Monastery Church, Noordeinde Palace, Grote of Sint-Jacobskerk, the Old City Hall, Museum De Gevangenpoort, The Hague's Historic Museum, the Mauritshuis and the Binnenhof.
How long does it take, and can we pause?
Most players take about two hours, walking and puzzles included, over a route of around 3.1 km. You can pause whenever you like and continue later, so there is time for a coffee or a closer look at any of the buildings along the way.
Can we play as a group, and do we need to book a time?
One ticket covers the whole group playing together. There is no time slot to book and no group to join: start whenever suits you. The quest is best played during the day, and you can also play it while riding a bicycle.
Is The Hague: Heart of the Old Town a guided city tour?
No. It is an app-guided outdoor game you play at your own pace. It uses The Hague’s landmarks as clue locations rather than offering a scheduled guide.
