About PLAZA DE MINA

Plaza de Mina is a leafy 19th-century square in the old town of Cádiz, Spain. Shaded by very large old trees and home to the Museo de Cádiz, it is one of the most pleasant places in the city to slow down between sights. It is also a good starting point for stories about the people who lived and traded in this port.

The story behind it

Like many squares in the old town, Plaza de Mina took its present shape in the 1800s, laid out as a garden on ground once tied to a Franciscan convent. Today it feels like a calm green room in the middle of a dense, busy city, with the museum on one side and townhouses around it.

The streets nearby are also linked to a local legend, the tale of the Casa del Pirata, the Pirate House. The story goes that a pirate who loved the sea found a great treasure, but lost his galley and spent many years stranded on an island before a ship rescued him. He feared his wife had remarried, yet she had waited for him. To reward her he sailed once more for the treasure, promising it would be his last voyage. When he came back, she had a house built for him that recalled an old ship, with large windows and even a rudder. She then fell ill and died, and he buried her in a coffin full of jewels. Thieves who heard of it desecrated the grave, the pirate killed them and he was jailed for the rest of his life. It is a legend, not documented history, but it fits a city shaped by the sea.

What to look for

  • The huge old trees that shade the square, with their thick trunks and sprawling roots, which give the garden its calm, almost tropical feel.
  • The Museo de Cádiz on the square, the best place to see how the city's long past is told through its collections.
  • The paths, benches and surrounding townhouses, which show how a 19th-century garden square was meant to be used as a place to stroll and meet.
  • The house of the pirate legend close by, said to recall a ship with big windows and a rudder, so keep an eye on the architecture of nearby streets.

Tips for your visit

  • Allow 20 to 30 minutes for the square itself, or longer if you go into the museum; check current opening hours before you plan it.
  • Morning or late afternoon is the nicest time, when the trees give good shade and the old town is quieter.
  • The square is free to enter and open to everyone, so it works well as a rest stop on a longer walk.
  • Other old town sights are within walking distance, so it is easy to combine with a wider stroll through Cádiz.
