About CATEDRAL

The Cathedral of Cádiz, officially the Cathedral of the Holy Cross on the Sea, is a large Baroque and Neoclassical church facing the Atlantic in the old town of Cádiz, Spain. Its dome of yellow tiles is one of the best-known shapes on the city skyline, and its crypt holds the tomb of the composer Manuel de Falla.

The story behind it

The cathedral replaced the city's earlier cathedral and took well over a century to build, from the early 1700s into the 1800s. Several architects worked on it in turn, which is why Baroque and Neoclassical styles sit side by side. Its pale stone has been weathered by sea air ever since.

The crypt is where the stories gather. Manuel de Falla, born in Cádiz, died in Argentina in 1946. His remains crossed the ocean by ship and were buried in the cathedral crypt. Visitors also come to see the preserved body of a young woman dressed in white, known as the Niña de la Comunión, the Communion girl. Many legends have grown around her. The most credible version says she is a relic, traditionally identified as Saint Victoria, martyr, who was brought from Italy and carried in a glass case, as was the custom for saints' relics.

What to look for

  • The dome covered in yellow tiles, which stands out from across the bay and from the rooftops of the old town.
  • The stonework of the exterior, darkened and worn by generations of salt air and sea wind.
  • The tomb of Manuel de Falla in the crypt, a quiet place of pilgrimage for lovers of Spanish music.
  • The figure of the Niña de la Comunión in the crypt, dressed in white and lying in her glass case.

Tips for your visit

  • Allow about an hour to see the interior and the crypt, and a little longer if you want to linger in the square outside.
  • You can go inside, but check current opening hours and what your ticket covers before you go, as access to different areas can change.
  • Morning or late afternoon light flatters the facade and the dome, and the square is calmer before the middle of the day.
  • The seafront walkway, the Roman Theatre and the old Pópulo quarter are all a short walk away, so it fits well into a wider stroll.
