About The Graveyard
The Graveyard at Bangor Abbey is a solemn and sacred space connected to one of Europe's most important early medieval monasteries. Bangor Abbey, founded in 558 AD by St. Comgall, developed into one of the largest and most influential monastic settlements in all of Christendom. From this remarkable community, monks ventured across Europe to evangelize, educate, and establish new centers of Christian learning. Many of these dedicated monks found their final resting place in this graveyard. The site is deeply moving for those interested in early Christian history and the profound impact Irish monasticism had on European civilization.
