Amsterdam Shadows: The Plantage Resistance

Amsterdam Shadows: The Plantage Resistance

Not long after Germany invaded the Netherlands in May of 1940, the Jewish Quarter of Amsterdam was closed off from the outside world. Until Canadian forces liberated the city five years later.

Only very few of the inhabitants who were living there at the beginning of the War ever returned from the camps. However, the Plantage neighbourhood, instead, is known primarily for its stories of resistance.

What was it like on the day the Canadians finally arrived and the city was liberated?

The mission: Your story in Amsterdam

Take your time to look around you. It is early May 1945. Canadian troops are nearing the city of Amsterdam that is currently awakening from a long famine winter.

Before entering, Canadian forces must be provided with intelligence as to the conditions within the city.

As a resistance operative, you have been selected to infiltrate the sealed-off, German-controlled Amsterdam Jewish District - the Ghetto - and report back with any information that might be useful for Allies.

Occupation and resistance context

Real acts of persecution, rescue and resistance in the Plantage

During the German occupation, the Plantage became a center of Nazi persecution: the Hollandsche Schouwburg was used as a deportation assembly point, while people connected with the nearby crèche and resistance networks helped children escape. This quest’s player mission is fictional, but the occupation, victims, rescuers and choices commemorated in the neighborhood are documented history.
