About World-Mundo
World-Mundo is a small monument in Plaza del Pilar, in the old centre of Zaragoza, Spain. It was made to mark the 500th anniversary of Christopher Columbus's voyage to the Americas, and it sits a few steps from the city's most famous church. It is a quick stop, but a good one for the story it tells and the view it gives of the square.
The story behind it
The little world was created as a tribute to the European arrival in the Americas, built for the fifth centenary of Columbus's voyage, a journey that changed the course of world history. The anniversary fell in 1992, and Spain marked it with monuments and public works in many cities, Zaragoza among them.
The monument is part of a pair with the fountain you pass on the way in. The fountain is shaped like the outline of Latin America, so the two works speak to each other across the square: one shows the continent, the other the globe. Turn around when you reach the monument and you will see the shape from a new angle.
What to look for
- The globe itself, which is the point of the monument: take a moment to see how it presents the world that Columbus's voyage opened up.
- The fountain you walked past to get here, whose water basin follows the outline of Latin America, best understood if you look back at it.
- The Basilica of Our Lady of the Pillar rising beside the square, the most famous church in Zaragoza, with its four towers clearly visible from this spot.
- The wide, open space of Plaza del Pilar, where locals, pilgrims and visitors cross paths all day.
Tips for your visit
- Allow about 10 to 15 minutes for the monument and the fountain, longer if you want to photograph the basilica and the square.
- The monument stands in an open public square, so there is no door to pass through and it can be seen at any time of day. Early morning is usually calmer, and evening light is pleasant on the basilica.
- You can go up one of the basilica towers and look over the city from above. Check current opening hours and access before you plan it.
- Plaza del Pilar is the heart of the old town, so cafes, other historic buildings and the river are all within an easy walk.
See it on a quest
World-Mundo is one of the places you pass on Zaragoza and the Napoleonic wars, a self-guided walk through the city built around the Napoleonic period. You reach the monument on foot as one stop of a longer route through the old town, the app tells you about each place as you arrive, and you solve a puzzle on the spot with what is in front of you. You start whenever you like, with no guide and no group to join. One ticket covers the whole group.
