About Tumski Island
Tumski Island (Ostrów Tumski) is the oldest part of Wrocław, a compact cathedral district on the Oder where the city began. Its Gothic churches, quiet lanes and gas lamps make it one of the most atmospheric corners of Wrocław, and it is easy to reach on foot from the Old Town.
The story behind it
This is the historic heart of Wrocław and the seat of its church for centuries. The name comes from the Old Polish word "tum", which meant cathedral, so the island simply became the island of the cathedral. Religious and civic life gathered here long before the merchant city grew up on the opposite bank.
Tumski Island was once a true island, set between branches of the Oder. In the 19th century the arm that separated it from the right bank was filled in, so formally it stopped being an island. The name stayed, and today you cross the water by bridge to reach the cathedral quarter. The cathedral was badly damaged in the Second World War and rebuilt afterwards.
What to look for
- The twin towers of the Cathedral of St John the Baptist, which dominate the skyline of the island and can be seen from far along the river.
- The Gothic brick churches standing close together, including the Church of the Holy Cross and St Bartholomew, which show how many places of worship were packed into this small area.
- The historic gas street lamps along the cobbled lanes, which give the island its distinctive look around dusk.
- The Tumski Bridge, where couples have fastened padlocks to the railings, with good views of the river and the island's silhouette.
Tips for your visit
- Allow about an hour to wander the lanes and look at the churches from outside, and more if you want to go inside or climb a tower. Check current opening hours for each church and for the cathedral viewing platform.
- Late afternoon into early evening is a lovely time to come, when the light is soft and the street lamps come on.
- The Botanical Garden of the University of Wrocław is right beside the island, so it pairs well with a slow stroll.
- The Old Town and the river islands to the south are a short walk away, so you can join the island to a longer day on foot.
