About Round Tower

The Round Tower (Okrugla kula) stands on Ulica Giuseppe Garibaldi in the old town of Umag, Croatia. It is one of the few surviving pieces of the fortifications that once ringed this Istrian coastal town, and it is a good place to understand why Umag was built the way it was.

The story behind it

Like many towns along the Istrian coast, Umag fortified itself against raids and threats from the sea. The Round Tower was one part of that defensive system: a lookout and strongpoint set into the line of town walls. Those walls followed the edge of the settlement, with gates that controlled who came and went, ramparts facing the waterfront and towers placed so that guards could see trouble early and respond quickly.

Most of that fortification line has not survived. The Round Tower is one of the rare reminders of an older Umag, a town whose first priority was endurance. Seeing it today, in the middle of a lived-in old town, makes it easier to picture the walled settlement it once belonged to.

What to look for

  • The rounded shape of the tower itself, which is designed to deflect blows and give defenders a wide view along the walls.
  • The way the tower sits among ordinary houses and streets, showing how the old defensive line was absorbed into the growing town.
  • The line of the old town edge, which you can follow by eye to imagine where the walls and ramparts once ran along the waterfront.
  • The stonework, where you can compare the older masonry with the buildings that grew up around it.

Tips for your visit

  • Allow about ten to fifteen minutes for the tower itself, longer if you wander the surrounding lanes of the old town.
  • Morning or late afternoon light is kind to the stone and makes the narrow streets pleasant to walk.
  • Combine it with the nearby Parish Church of the Assumption and St. Peregrine and the small square behind it, Corte delle Ore, which takes its name from the bell tower close by.
  • Treat it as a stop to look at from outside, and check current opening hours or access if you hope to see anything more.

See it on a quest
