About Piața Victoriei

Piața Victoriei, also called Opera Square, is the main promenade of Timișoara in western Romania, a long pedestrian square framed by an opera and theatre building at one end and a cathedral at the other. It matters for its grand architecture and for its role in history: in December 1989, speakers on the balcony of the opera building proclaimed Timișoara the first Romanian city free of dictatorship.

The story behind it

The square is where Timișoara shows itself off. At its southern end stands the large theatre and opera building at Strada Alba Iulia 1, which today is shared by four companies: the Romanian National Opera, the "Mihai Eminescu" National Theatre, the "Csiky Gergely" Hungarian State Theatre and the German State Theatre. That sharing reflects the long Romanian, Hungarian and German presence in this part of the Banat.

The building also has a place in the story of the 1989 revolution. As protests spread through the city that December, crowds gathered in front of it, and people took the microphone on the balcony to declare Timișoara free of dictatorship. Many Romanians still link the square with that moment of courage.

What to look for

  • Look up at the balcony of the opera and theatre building, the spot where citizens spoke to the crowd in December 1989.
  • Notice the posters and playbills outside, which can announce performances in Romanian, Hungarian and German under one roof.
  • Find the statue of the she-wolf with the twins Romulus and Remus in front of the opera, a reminder of Romania's Roman roots.
  • Walk to the northern end to see the Orthodox Metropolitan Cathedral, whose patterned, colourful roof stands out above the square.

Tips for your visit

  • Allow 30 to 45 minutes to stroll the whole length of the square, longer if you stop at a café terrace.
  • Come in the evening, when the facades are lit and locals take their walk, or early in the morning for quiet photos.
  • You can walk through the square freely at any time. To go inside the theatre or cathedral, check current opening hours and performance schedules.
  • Union Square, with its baroque buildings, is a short walk away, so the two fit easily into one outing.
