We are a group of language students and we played the game with our teacher: a great and fun way to practise, and learn interesting stuff about our city that we didn't know.

Quests for classes

Quests a class can play in Dublin

A Questo school day in Dublin moves between two quite different parts of the centre: the Georgian streets around St Stephen's Green, Grafton Street and Trinity College, and the older city around Christ Church, St Patrick's Cathedral and Dublin Castle, with one longer route out to Kilmainham Gaol. For history groups, 1916 Rising History links the GPO, St Stephen's Green and the Royal College of Surgeons. The Time Keeper takes younger pupils past both medieval cathedrals and Marsh's Library. Ghosts of Dublin, which can also be played in French, Spanish and German, suits Key Stage 4 and sixth form. The quests cover ages 8 to 18.

Teams, supervision and logistics

  • Teams and supervision

Teams of 3 to 5 share a phone.

    MoreLess

Under-14s: one adult per 2 to 3 teams, agreed checkpoints; 14 to 18: school policy. St Stephen's Green has 14 entrances, so name one.

  • Getting around

The centre is compact; O'Connell Street to St Stephen's Green is about 15 minutes on foot.

    MoreLess

TFI sells Luas group day or return tickets for 20 or more, ordered 5 days ahead.

  • Toilets

    Public toilets are scarce.

    MoreLess

The only on-street unit is by St Stephen's Green at the top of Grafton Street, open 10am to 6pm; City Hall on Dame Street has some. Otherwise use free museums.

  • Lunch

Classes usually picnic on the lawns of St Stephen's Green or Merrion Square.

    MoreLess

St Stephen's Green bye-laws and opening times are posted at each main entrance; check them and take litter away.

  • Wet weather

The National Museum of Ireland on Kildare Street, the National Gallery on Merrion Square and the Chester Beatty at Dublin Castle are free.

    MoreLess

The quest can be replayed free within 30 days.

Caution: Traffic drives on the left, so pupils must look right first. Luas trams run quietly along the west side of St Stephen's Green and the other sides are busy roads; use the signalled crossings.

What they learn

History

Medieval Dublin (Christ Church and St Patrick's cathedrals, Dublin Castle, the old city wall, Marsh's Library); the Irish Parliament at Parliament House; the Great Famine at the Famine Memorial; and the 1916 Easter Rising at the GPO, St Stephen's Green, the Royal College of Surgeons and Kilmainham Gaol.

Geography

Urban geography, comparing the Georgian squares and streets around St Stephen's Green with the older street pattern of the Liberties. Map reading and orienteering on walking routes of 1.3 to 4.1 km.

English

Reading instructions closely, picking out clues from inscriptions, plaques and buildings, and building a story from evidence in the detective and murder-mystery quests.

Citizenship

State and civic buildings on the routes, including City Hall, the Department of the Taoiseach, Parliament House and the National Library of Ireland.

Teacher FAQ

Questions about Dublin

Which Dublin quest suits which age group?
For Key Stage 2 (8 to 11): The Time Keeper, Lucky Treasure Hunt: The Golden Shamrock, and Christmas Operation: Sleigh Down in December. For Key Stage 3 (11 to 14): 1916 Rising History, The Dublin Incident, and Dublin in Flames. For Key Stage 4 and sixth form: Ghosts of Dublin and Murder Mystery: Death in the Shadows.
How long does a quest take?
1916 Rising History is the shortest at about 35 minutes over 3 km, so it pairs well with a second quest. Most others take 75 to 90 minutes. The Dublin Incident is the longest walk at 4.1 km. With younger classes, add time for regrouping and toilet stops.
How many pupils share a phone?
One phone per team of 3 to 5 pupils. It can be a staff phone or one pupil's phone. A class of 30 usually makes 6 to 8 teams. Start teams a few minutes apart so they do not crowd each stop.
Where should we start?
St Stephen's Green is the most practical base. It has a Luas Green Line stop, and it is where the Golden Shamrock and Murder Mystery quests start (at Fusiliers' Arch) and 1916 Rising History starts (at the Royal College of Surgeons). The Time Keeper starts in St Patrick's Park, and The Dublin Incident at Teeling Whiskey Distillery.
What does it cost?
5 euros per pupil. Teachers and chaperones play free. You can pay by card or invoice. There is no booking slot, so you start whenever your class arrives. Staff can preview a quest free from home before the trip. On The Time Keeper, one entrance ticket has to be bought separately, so check which one in the preview.
What happens if it rains?
You can pause and continue later, or replay the quest free within 30 days. Nearby indoor options are the National Museum of Ireland on Kildare Street and the National Gallery of Ireland on Merrion Square, both free. The Gallery's guided school tours are free but must be booked.
Do pupils need accounts or mobile data?
Pupils do not need accounts. Each team's phone needs mobile data during the quest, or the quest downloaded beforehand. For visiting groups from outside Ireland, check roaming on staff phones, or download the quest over hotel or school wifi the evening before.
