We are a group of language students and we played the game with our teacher: a great and fun way to practise, and learn interesting stuff about our city that we didn't know.

Quests for classes

Quests a class can play in Budapest

Budapest splits a school day neatly between Pest and Buda. On the flat Pest side, Budapest Highlights: The Supernatural Detective is an easy 2.9 km route from the Statue of Andrássy past the Parliament, St Stephen's Basilica and the Dohány Street Synagogue. Over on the hilly Buda side, Secrets of Buda Castle leads teams through the Vienna Gate and Holy Trinity Square. Budapest Eclipse of Shadows suits a calmer afternoon on Margaret Island among the Japanese Garden and the tombstone of St Margaret. Older Key Stage 4 and sixth form groups can try Murder Mystery: Death in the Shadows, which starts at the Danubius Fountain. The quests cover ages 8 to 18.

Teams, supervision and logistics

  • Teams and supervision

Teams of 3 to 5 share one phone; for under-14s, one adult per 2 to 3 teams with agreed checkpoints, for 14 to 18 the school's policy.

    MoreLess

    Pedestrian Váci utca gets crowded.

  • Getting around

BKK runs the metro, trams and buses.

    MoreLess

Buy one Budapest 24-hour group travelcard per team, valid for up to five people; BKK's pupil group travelcard and free under-14 travel need Hungarian school documents.

  • Toilets

Public toilets usually cost 200 to 400 HUF, often in exact coins, at metro stations and Erzsébet tér.

    MoreLess

Large shopping malls are free; fast-food chains may expect a purchase, so carry coins.

  • Lunch

Erzsébet tér, beside Deák Ferenc tér, has lawns and paid toilets; Margaret Island suits longer breaks but its toilets are poor.

    MoreLess

Keep food away from memorials such as the Shoes on the Danube Bank.

  • Wet weather

Central Market Hall is free to enter, and the Hungarian National Museum sells cheaper youth group tickets to EEA pupils.

    MoreLess

If rain spoils the day, replay the quest free within 30 days.

Caution: Pickpockets work Váci utca, the M2 and M3 platforms, Central Market Hall and trams 2, 4 and 6. Keep team phones in front pockets, bags zipped and teams together on crowded trams.

What they learn

History

Medieval Hungary (St Stephen, King Matthias, St Margaret, the chronicler Anonymous), Ottoman Buda (Gül Baba's tomb, Király Baths, the tomb of Abdurrahman Pasha), the 1848 to 1849 War of Independence, the 1896 Millennium and Budapest's Golden Age, and Second World War memorials including the Carl Lutz Memorial and the memorial to victims of the German occupation.

Geography

Urban geography of a city split by the Danube, comparing flat Pest with the hills of Buda and an island park. Pupils practise map reading and orientation as teams find each stop.

English and modern languages

Pupils read and follow written instructions in English. Language classes can play The Supernatural Detective in German, Spanish, Italian, Polish or Romanian, Secrets of Buda Castle in German or Italian, and the Margaret Island quest in German.

Citizenship and teamwork

The Parliament and Sándor Palace as seats of government, and teams sharing roles (navigator, reader, puzzle solver) and agreeing answers together.

Teacher FAQ

Questions about Budapest

Which Budapest quest suits which age group?
For Key Stage 2 (ages 8 to 11), choose The Supernatural Detective (easy and wheelchair accessible), the Margaret Island investigation or Secrets of Buda Castle (medium difficulty). The Jewish Quarter quest suits Key Stage 3 because it covers the Second World War. Murder Mystery: Death in the Shadows and Sweet Tastes of Budapest's Golden Age suit Key Stage 4 and sixth form.
How long does a quest take?
Most take 80 to 90 minutes over about 2.5 to 3 km. The Jewish Quarter quest takes about 2 hours, Buda Castle District: Time Travel Mystery about 2 hours over 5.3 km, and Sweet Tastes of Budapest's Golden Age about 3 hours over 4.6 km. With a class, add time for regrouping and toilet stops.
How many pupils share a phone, and do they need accounts?
Teams of 3 to 5 pupils share one phone, which can be a teacher's or a pupil's. Pupils do not need accounts. Each team's phone needs mobile data, or the quest downloaded beforehand on hotel wifi. Bring power banks, as the longer routes use a lot of battery.
Where do we start and how do we get there?
Each quest has a fixed start point that you can check in the free teacher preview. The Statue of Andrássy is beside the Parliament at Kossuth Lajos tér (M2, tram 2). The Dohány Street Synagogue is near Astoria and Deák Ferenc tér. Margaret Bridge is on trams 4 and 6. Castle Hill is reached by bus 16 or the funicular from Clark Ádám tér.
What does it cost?
Questo costs 5 euros per pupil, and teachers and chaperones play free. You can pay by card or invoice. Public transport, toilet coins and any museum tickets are extra. You can preview each quest free from home before you book anything.
What happens if it rains?
You can replay a quest free within 30 days, so a washed-out day can be moved. Margaret Island is almost entirely outdoors, so rain matters most there. A nearby indoor option is the Hungarian National Museum, which offers group youth tickets.
Is any stop unsuitable for a school group?
The last listed stop on the Jewish Quarter quest is outside the Hops Beer Bar, and one Sweet Tastes stop tells the story of a historic brothel, which is why that quest is listed for ages 14 to 18. Check both in the free teacher preview and decide what suits your class.
