We are a group of language students and we played the game with our teacher: a great and fun way to practise, and learn interesting stuff about our city that we didn't know.

Quests for classes

Quests a class can play in Boston

A Boston field trip with Questo is mostly a day in the North End, the old Italian neighborhood around North Square, Hanover Street and the Old North Church, with further routes through Boston Common, Copley Square and the Fenway. For classes, the strongest picks are Historical Boston: The Record Breaker, which passes the Union Oyster House, the 54th Regiment Memorial and the Massachusetts State House; North End Boston: Mafia Mission, which visits the site of the Great Molasses Flood; and, for high school, Murder Mystery: Death in the Shadows in North End. Quests suit students from about 3rd grade through 12th grade.

Teams, supervision and logistics

  • Teams and supervision

Teams of 3 to 5 students share one phone.

    MoreLess

For under-14s, plan one chaperone per 2 to 3 teams with agreed checkpoints; for ages 14 to 18, follow your school's policy.

  • Getting around

Schools can register MBTA subway and bus trips for 10 or more students two weeks ahead to prepay fares; under-12s ride free with paying chaperones.

    MoreLess

    Downtown is compact and walkable.

  • Toilets

Free restrooms are in the Boston Common Visitor Center, Faneuil Hall (basement and quieter second floor) and Quincy Market.

    MoreLess

City Hall's close weekends; the City Hall Square City Toilet costs 25 cents.

  • Lunch

Classes eat packed lunches on the lawns of Boston Common, in the Public Garden next door or along the Rose Kennedy Greenway near Faneuil Hall.

    MoreLess

    Take all litter away.

  • Wet weather

The Central Library in Copley Square is free to enter, and the State House runs free weekday tours booked by phone.

    MoreLess

If rain spoils the day, replay the quest free within 30 days.

Caution: Faneuil Hall Marketplace gets very crowded in July and August, with queues for the Quincy Market restrooms. Agree a fixed meeting point there and count teams before moving on.

What they learn

History, American Revolution and colonial Boston

The Old North Church, the Clough House, Paul Revere Mall, the Paul Revere Statue, Rachel Revere Square and North Square, plus the Massachusetts State House on The Record Breaker.

Geography

Urban geography of a dense historic neighborhood (the Skinniest House, narrow North End streets), the waterfront at Battery Wharf, the Rose Kennedy Greenway (a park on the line of a former elevated highway), and map reading and orientation between checkpoints in the North End, Back Bay and the Fenway.

English and world languages

Students read and follow written instructions and story text at each stop. Kid Quest: Solve the case of the lost senses can also be played in Spanish or French (and Romanian), so a world language class can play it in the language it studies.

Civics and teamwork

The Massachusetts State House as the seat of state government, memorials as public history, and teams sharing roles (navigator, reader, puzzle solver) and agreeing on answers together.

Teacher FAQ

Questions about Boston

Which Boston quest suits which grade level?
For about 3rd to 5th grade: Kid Quest: Solve the case of the lost senses, The Oz Escape, The Oz Escape: A Wicked Glitch, or Historical Boston: The Record Breaker with chaperones. For middle school: North End Boston: Mafia Mission. For high school: Murder Mystery: Death in the Shadows in North End and Boston Strangler: A Detective's Hunt, which deal with darker material.
How long does a quest take?
Most North End quests take about 1.5 hours over 1.3 to 2.1 km. The Record Breaker takes about 80 minutes but covers 3.8 km. Mafia Mission takes about 2.5 hours over 2.8 km, and Boston Strangler about 2 hours over 3.7 km. Allow extra time for a large class, restroom stops and regrouping.
How many students share a phone?
One phone per team of 3 to 5 students, so a class of 30 needs about 6 to 10 phones. It can be a chaperone's phone or a student's. Teams start a few minutes apart so they spread out along the route rather than crowding one stop.
Where do we start, and how do we get there?
Most school quests start at or near North Square in the North End, a short walk from Haymarket station on the Orange and Green Lines. Mafia Mission starts at the Rose Kennedy Rose Garden on the Greenway. The Boston Public Library is on Copley Square, with the Green Line Copley stop directly in front.
What does it cost?
5 euros per student. Teachers and chaperones play free. You can pay by card or by invoice, and you can preview a quest free from home before you book the trip, which is useful for checking the route and content.
What happens if it rains?
You can replay free within 30 days if the weather ruins the day. On the day itself, the Central Library at Copley Square is free and open to the public, and Quincy Market by Haymarket has an indoor food hall for lunch under cover.
Do students need accounts or mobile data?
No student accounts are needed. Each team's phone needs mobile data during the quest, or the quest downloaded beforehand on school or home Wi-Fi. Check the phones are charged, and bring a power bank for the longer routes such as Mafia Mission.
