We are a group of language students and we played the game with our teacher: a great and fun way to practise, and learn interesting stuff about our city that we didn't know.

Quests for classes

Quests a class can play in Antwerp

It starts at Groenplaats, just south of the cathedral, and covers the old town, the Scheldt riverside and the docks. Over about 5.5 km and 14 stops, teams pass the Stadhuis, Het Steen, the Carolus Borromeus church, the Paleis op de Meir and the Bourla theatre. They also reach the MAS beyond the Schipperskwartier and stop at the pedestrian tunnel under the river. Teams, supervision and logistics

  • Teams and supervision

Teams of 3 to 5 share one phone.

    MoreLess

Under-14s: one adult per 2 to 3 teams with agreed checkpoints; 14 to 18: your school's policy. Avoid regrouping on the crowded Meir.

  • Getting around

The centre is walkable; De Lijn runs the trams, partly underground.

    MoreLess

Its Groepsticket covers 10 to 30 people, 2.20 euros each, 60 minutes, travelling together, so split larger classes. Avoid 15:30 to 18:00.

  • Toilets

Public toilets are scarce, about 100 across the whole city, and Meir shops often refuse.

    MoreLess

Plan stops at public buildings during opening hours, such as the MAS, the Permeke library or Centraal Station.

  • Lunch

Classes eat packed lunches in the Stadspark, near Centraal Station, where Bar Capitale's toilets are open to non-customers for a fee, or in Droogdokkenpark on Eilandje.

    MoreLess

    Take all litter away.

  • Wet weather

The MAS boulevard, rooftop panorama and Visible Storage are free without a ticket, and booked school groups enter the museum free.

    MoreLess

If rain spoils the day, replay the quest free within 30 days.

Caution: Antwerp trams share streets with traffic in parts of the centre and cyclists are numerous. Brief pupils to stay off tram tracks and cycle paths, and cross only at marked crossings.

What they learn

History

Antwerp's development from the medieval riverside fortress of Het Steen to the Gothic cathedral, the Renaissance Stadhuis, the Baroque Carolus Borromeus church, the 18th-century Paleis op de Meir and the 19th-century Bourla theatre.

Geography

Urban geography of a port city, following the Scheldt from the old centre to the docks around the MAS and the pedestrian tunnel under the river. Pupils also practise map reading and orientation as teams find each stop.

English or modern foreign languages

Pupils read and follow written instructions and story text to solve each puzzle. The quest is also available in French, German, Spanish, Italian, Portuguese, Romanian and Dutch, so a languages class can play it in the language they study.

Citizenship and teamwork

Teams share one phone, agree on answers, manage their own time between checkpoints and move safely and respectfully through a busy city centre.

Teacher FAQ

Questions about Antwerp

Which Antwerp quest suits which age group?
Antwerp has one school-ready quest, The Lost Boy of Antwerp: A Mystery to Unravel. It is pitched at pupils aged 11 to 14 (Key Stage 3), and older groups can play it too. Preview the route at home first, including the Schipperskwartier stretch by the docks, to judge whether it suits your class.
How long does the quest take?
Allow about 3 hours 20 minutes of play for 14 stops over about 5.5 km, plus a lunch break. You can pause the quest and continue later, so a packed lunch or a museum visit can be fitted into the middle without losing progress.
How many pupils per phone?
One phone per team of 3 to 5 pupils, either a teacher's phone or one pupil's. A class of 30 would usually run as 6 to 10 teams, starting a few minutes apart from Groenplaats so they do not crowd the same stop.
Where do we start and how do we get there?
The quest starts at Groenplaats, the square just south of the cathedral. It is about 1.6 km from Antwerpen-Centraal, roughly a 25 minute walk. Groenplaats premetro station, under the square, is served by trams 3, 5, 9 and 15.
How much does it cost?
5 euros per pupil. Teachers and chaperones play free. You can pay by card or by invoice, and there is a free teacher preview so you can check the route from home before booking transport. No attraction tickets are needed on the route.
What happens if it rains?
Teams can pause and go indoors at almost any point on the route. The MAS is free for school groups and under-18s, and the Museum Plantin-Moretus is free for under-18s and school groups. If the weather ruins the day, you can replay free within 30 days.
Do pupils need accounts or mobile data?
Pupils do not need accounts. Each team phone needs mobile data during the quest, or the quest downloaded beforehand on the school or hotel wifi. Bring a charged power bank per team, as the route takes over three hours.
