About San Diego Museum of Art

The San Diego Museum of Art is the main fine art museum of Balboa Park in San Diego, California, housed in an ornate Spanish-style building on El Prado. It is best known for its European collection, especially Spanish painting, and its facade is one of the most photographed along the park's main promenade.

The story behind it

The museum opened in 1926 as The Fine Arts Gallery of San Diego, a few years after the park hosted the 1915 Panama-California Exposition that gave it so much of its architecture. In 1978 it took its current name, the San Diego Museum of Art.

Its collection is strongest in European art. Spanish painters are well represented, with works by El Greco, Murillo, Ribera and Zurbarán, and there are also paintings by northern masters such as Rubens, Hals and van Dyck. The museum's website lists current exhibitions and highlights if you want to plan around a particular artist.

What to look for

  • The richly carved front of the building, which shows off the Spanish Revival style that defines much of Balboa Park.
  • The setting on El Prado, where the museum faces the Plaza de Panama and the surrounding park buildings.
  • The Spanish paintings inside, where names like El Greco, Murillo and Zurbarán sit in the same collection.
  • The Dutch and Flemish portraits by Hals, Rubens and van Dyck, which reward a slow look at faces and fabrics.

Tips for your visit

  • Plan on one to two hours inside if you enjoy paintings, or a few minutes if you only want the facade and the plaza.
  • Check current opening hours and any special exhibitions before you go, since both change through the year.
  • Visit in the morning for softer light on the facade and a calmer walk along El Prado.
  • Other Balboa Park attractions are close on foot, so the museum fits easily into a longer walk through the park.
