About Subtile by Federico Díaz

Subtile is a public sculpture by Czech artist Federico Díaz, set along the River Walk Trail in West Sacramento, California, across the water from Sacramento. Thousands of small steel disks hang in a cluster that echoes the trees around it, so the piece reads as part tree, part cloud and part digital image.

The story behind it

Subtile was installed in 2017 as part of the public art along the River Walk, a trail that follows the water and gives wide views back toward the city. Díaz works with new media technology, and for this piece he used an algorithm that imitates the way trees grow to shape the form of the sculpture.

The artwork is made of about 4,000 steel disks, which work like leaves and are designed to flutter in the wind. They can also be read as pixels, and the artist has described the work as something we might perceive as an error in the environment. His wider aim, in works of this kind, is to make invisible things visible.

What to look for

  • The thousands of steel disks, each one acting as a leaf that moves when the wind picks up.
  • The way the sculpture changes with distance: from far away it can seem to have no edges, and up close it breaks into individual points.
  • The echo between the cluster and the real trees that stand around it, which is the link between nature and art that the piece is built on.
  • The shifting light on the metal, which makes the form look like a cloud or a pixelated tree depending on the moment.

Tips for your visit

  • Plan on 10 to 20 minutes for the sculpture itself, longer if you want to walk more of the River Walk Trail.
  • Go on a breezy day if you can, since the movement of the disks is a big part of the effect.
  • It stands outdoors on a public trail, so you can see it from all sides without going inside anywhere.
  • Bring a camera and look back across the water, as the trail also gives a good view of the Sacramento skyline.
