About City Hall Rotterdam
Rotterdam City Hall is one of the few pre-war buildings still standing in the city centre, a grand Beaux-Arts structure that survived the devastating German bombing of May 14, 1940.
The building was designed after a competition in 1912 and constructed between 1914 and 1920. Its 71-metre clock tower, the foundation stone laid by Queen Wilhelmina on July 15, 1915, dominates the surrounding skyline. The design blends Beaux-Arts grandeur with Art Deco touches, and the perfectly symmetrical four-wing layout around a central courtyard gives the building an imposing presence.
When the Luftwaffe bombed Rotterdam in 1940, destroying almost the entire city centre, the City Hall was one of the few large buildings to survive. The fire that consumed much of the surrounding area stopped just short of the building, though it suffered some damage. Its survival made it a symbol of resilience in a city that had to rebuild itself almost from scratch.
The building was designated a Rijksmonument (National Monument) on October 10, 2000. It remains the seat of Rotterdam's municipal government.
The City Hall is currently undergoing a major refurbishment. When open, guided tours take visitors through otherwise inaccessible spaces, including Victorian-era police cells, the courtyard, and the clock tower viewing platform.
If you're on a Questo quest through Rotterdam, the City Hall is a stop where the city's determination to survive and reinvent itself is written into the very walls that refused to fall.
