About Falkenhof

The Falkenhof is a historic farmstead and museum on Tiefe Strasse in Rheine, in the Münsterland region of Germany. It is closely tied to the beginnings of the town, because the estate known in the early Middle Ages as the villa Reni is traditionally seen as the seed from which Rheine grew. If you want to understand where Rheine comes from, this is the place to start.

The story behind it

The Falkenhof is thought to go back to the Carolingian period, when a manor called the villa Reni stood here. Over the centuries it became known as the Falkenhof, and the settlement that grew up around it developed into the town of Rheine.

In 838, Emperor Louis the Pious gave the estate to the Imperial Abbey of Herford. The abbey kept it for close to a thousand years and leased it out only to noble families. That long, steady ownership helps explain why this one courtyard carries so much of the town's early story. Today the buildings house an exhibition with everyday objects from the Middle Ages.

What to look for

  • Take in the setting on Tiefe Strasse, and think of this spot as the starting point from which the rest of the town spread outwards.
  • Look at the age and character of the buildings themselves, which reflect the long life of a farmstead that served an abbey for centuries.
  • Inside the exhibition, look for the medieval household and working utensils, which show how ordinary people lived rather than only how rulers did.
  • Notice how close the Falkenhof sits to the heart of the old town, a reminder that Rheine grew outward from here.

Tips for your visit

  • Allow roughly 45 minutes to an hour if you want to see the exhibition, and less if you only want to see the building from outside.
  • Check current opening hours before you go, as museum times can change with the season.
  • Combine it with a stroll through the old town centre, which is only a short walk away.
  • Go earlier in the day for a calmer visit, and bring a little curiosity about medieval everyday life.

See it on a quest
