About Kastel
Kastel is the 17th-century Venetian fortress that crowns the hill at the center of old Pula, Croatia. Fortifications stood on this summit long before the present walls, and today it is the best place to see how the town, its harbor and its Roman monuments fit together. The fortress also houses the Historical and Maritime Museum of Istria.
The story behind it
The hill at the heart of Pula has been a stronghold for a very long time. The Histri, the people who gave Istria its name, fortified it first, and the Romans and later medieval rulers built on the same high ground. Whoever held the summit could watch over the town and the bay below.
The fortress you see now was built by the Venetians in the 17th century. Its design is a compact, four-cornered Baroque fort with projecting bastions, made to stand up to artillery fire. Much of the stone is said to have come from the Roman theater that once stood on nearby Monte Zaro, a sign of how the Venetians treated the ancient city as a ready supply of building material. The result is solid military architecture that still dominates the skyline.
What to look for
- The thick walls and the four corner bastions, which show how the fort was shaped to deflect and return cannon fire.
- The view from the ramparts, where you can pick out the Arena, the harbor and the roofs around the Forum in one sweep.
- The way the old town's streets and rooftops gather around the foot of the hill, which explains why this spot was so valuable for so long.
- The museum inside the fortress, which collects the history of Istria and its seafaring past.
Tips for your visit
- Allow about 45 minutes to an hour for the walk up and the views, and longer if you plan to visit the museum.
- Late afternoon is a good time to come, when the light softens over the rooftops and the bay.
- The approach is a short uphill walk from the old town, so wear comfortable shoes. Check current opening hours and access to the ramparts and museum before you go.
- The Forum, the Temple of Augustus, the Arch of the Sergii and the Arena are all within an easy walk, so Kastel pairs well with a wider stroll through the center.
See it on a quest
The quest Pula: Shadows of the Empire is a good way to see Kastel with its Roman and later layers in mind. You reach the fortress on foot as one stop of a longer route through the area, the app tells you about each place as you arrive, and you solve a puzzle on the spot, so you look at the walls and the view more closely than you would on a quick visit. It is a paid quest, and one ticket covers the whole group. You can start whenever you like, with no guide and no group to join.
