About Mexico Pavilion in EPCOT

The Mexico Pavilion is one of the eleven country pavilions of World Showcase at EPCOT in Orlando, Florida. A stepped pyramid holds an indoor marketplace plaza lit like a evening in Mexico, with a restaurant, shops and a boat ride. It is one of the most atmospheric corners of the park and one of the easiest to enjoy at any time of day.

The story behind it

The pavilion opened in 1982 with the park itself, then called EPCOT Center, and it has been part of World Showcase ever since. Its design draws on the pyramid temples of ancient Mexico, and the building plays the role of a monument you walk into rather than around.

Inside, the idea is to make you feel you have arrived somewhere else. The plaza is kept in permanent twilight, with a volcano glowing in the painted backdrop, market stalls and lanterns around the square, and a river running along one side. The boat ride on that river, now the Gran Fiesta Tour Starring The Three Caballeros, replaced an earlier ride on the same route in the 2000s.

What to look for

  • The pyramid exterior, whose stepped shape and carved stone look set the tone before you reach the doors.
  • The artificial night sky and the volcano in the distance, which make the indoor plaza feel like an open-air square at dusk.
  • The market stalls in the plaza, where crafts, pottery and colourful textiles are on display and on sale.
  • The San Angel Inn restaurant beside the river, whose lantern-lit terrace looks out over the boats drifting past.

Tips for your visit

  • You need EPCOT admission to enter the pavilion, so check current opening hours and entry rules before you go.
  • Allow 30 to 60 minutes to wander the plaza, browse the shops and ride the boat, longer if you plan to eat.
  • The plaza is indoors and cooler than the lagoon promenade, which makes it a good stop in the middle of a hot afternoon.
  • Norway is the next pavilion along the lagoon, so you can combine the two in a single short stretch of walking.
