About Chickasaw Bricktown Ballpark

Chickasaw Bricktown Ballpark is the downtown baseball stadium of Oklahoma City, home of the Oklahoma City Dodgers, the Triple-A team affiliated with the Los Angeles Dodgers. It opened in 1998 on the edge of the Bricktown entertainment district and was the first project of the city's MAPS program to be finished, which makes it a landmark of the city's downtown revival as well as a place to watch a game.

The story behind it

In the early 1990s Oklahoma City voters approved MAPS, a capital improvement plan paid for by a temporary sales tax, to rebuild the downtown core. The ballpark was the first of those projects to be completed, opening in April 1998. It gave the old warehouse district of Bricktown a reason to fill up on summer evenings, and restaurants, bars and the canal soon grew up around it.

The address is on Johnny Bench Drive, named for the Hall of Fame catcher who grew up in Oklahoma. The home team has changed names over the years, and it has been the Dodgers since 2015, but the stadium has remained the anchor of the district.

What to look for

  • The brick exterior echoes the old warehouses of Bricktown, so the stadium blends into the streets around it instead of standing apart.
  • The street sign for Johnny Bench Drive marks the stadium's link with one of Oklahoma's best-known baseball names.
  • The view along the outer walls shows how close the ballpark sits to the canal and the restored warehouses of the district.
  • On game evenings, watch the crowds streaming in from the bars and restaurants, which shows how much the stadium shapes life in Bricktown.

Tips for your visit

  • Allow 15 to 20 minutes to see the outside and take photos, or an evening if you attend a game. Check the current schedule and opening hours before you go.
  • Late afternoon is a good time to walk by, when the brick glows and the district starts to fill up.
  • Going inside normally means buying a ticket for a game, so plan around the home schedule if you want to see the field.
  • Bricktown's canal, restaurants and shops are all within a short walk, so you can combine the ballpark with a meal or a stroll.
