The armistice expired at noon on March 20th. Since then, every piece of news reaching Novara has been worse than the last. General Chrzanowski, the Polish officer to whom King Charles Albert has entrusted command of the Sardinian army, has ordered a retreat toward the city after the defeat at Mortara.
Forty thousand men are gathering along the ridge south of Novara. And Marshal Radetzky's Austrians are right behind them. You are an officer of the city garrison. This morning you were urgently summoned to the Castle: the city has only a few hours to prepare, and someone needs to make sure every strategically important point, gates, squares, towers, gathering places, is ready to hold, or at least not to collapse into chaos.
For now, you only have a list of places to check, and an enemy closing in an hour at a time. Novara is waiting. Move.
