About Helmsley Building
The Helmsley Building is a 1929 office tower at 230 Park Avenue in Midtown Manhattan, New York City, standing directly north of Grand Central Terminal. Built as the New York Central Building, it is a landmark of the Beaux-Arts style, and Park Avenue traffic passes around and through its base. It also has a place in New York gangland history.
The story behind it
The tower was designed by the architects Warren & Wetmore, who also worked on Grand Central, and it was built for the New York Central Railroad. It was later renamed after the Helmsley real estate firm, which took over the building in the 1970s. Its pyramid roof and lantern still catch the eye from far down Park Avenue.
The address also appears in the story of how the American mafia reorganized itself. In 1931 Salvatore Maranzano, who had come out on top of a bitter gang war, kept offices here and styled himself the boss of all bosses. Accounts say Lucky Luciano had other plans. On September 10, 1931, men posing as government agents were sent to Maranzano's office, and he was killed. Luciano then pushed for a governing Commission of crime families in place of a single boss, an arrangement meant to settle disputes between them.
What to look for
- The pyramid-shaped roof and lantern at the top, which are easiest to appreciate from a few blocks up or down Park Avenue.
- The way Park Avenue splits and runs around the base of the building, so you can see traffic move through the structure itself.
- The ornate stonework and decorative detail around the entrances, which echo the look of Grand Central next door.
- The view looking north from the Grand Central side, where the tower closes off the avenue like a gatehouse.
Tips for your visit
- Allow about 10 to 15 minutes for the building itself. It works best as one stop on a longer walk around Midtown.
- Viewing the exterior is free from the pavement. It is an office building, so check current access rules before planning to go inside.
- Morning light or dusk is a good time for photos, when the roof stands out against the sky.
- Grand Central Terminal is right beside it, so you can easily combine the two in one visit.
