About Wilton's Music Hall

Wilton's Music Hall is a Victorian music hall in Graces Alley, off Wellclose Square in London's East End, and is widely described as the world's oldest surviving grand music hall. It matters because it kept much of its original character through decades as a mission hall, a near-demolition and a long fundraising campaign, and it is now a working theatre and venue.

The story behind it

The site has a history stretching back to the late 1600s, but the hall as you see it today was built by John Wilton in the Victorian era. He wanted to bring something of West End glamour to the East End, and the hall drew audiences from the busy streets around the docks.

In 1888 the building was bought by the East London Methodist Mission, which called it the Mahogany Bar Mission. It served an area known for severe poverty, and during the great Dock Strike of 1889 a soup kitchen helped feed dockers' families. The mission stayed for nearly 70 years, welcoming people of all faiths and backgrounds and speaking out against social injustice. Later, the work of determined fundraisers and supporters allowed the hall to reopen as a theatre, and its worn interior has since made it a popular film location.

What to look for

  • The slender twisted columns that hold up the balcony inside the auditorium are among the hall's most recognisable features.
  • The walls and plasterwork are deliberately left weathered, so you can see layers of age instead of a fresh restoration.
  • The entrance sits in a modest terrace on Graces Alley, so the grand hall behind it comes as a surprise.
  • The surrounding streets still show the mix of old warehouses, churches and later buildings that made up this working neighbourhood.

Tips for your visit

  • Allow 20 to 30 minutes for the exterior and the alley, or longer if you are going to a show, a tour or the bar.
  • Wilton's is a working venue, so check current opening hours and what is on before you plan to go in.
  • Daylight shows the brickwork and the narrow lanes best, while an evening visit suits you if you want the atmosphere of a performance.
  • The area is close to Tower Hill, Whitechapel and the old dock districts, so it combines easily with a longer walk.

See it on a quest

The hall sits on Historical London: The Docklands of East End, a self-guided walk with a Docklands and East End theme. You reach Wilton's on foot as one stop of a longer route through the area, the app tells you about the place as you arrive, and you solve a puzzle in front of what you are looking at. There is no guide and no group to join, so you can start whenever suits you. It is a paid quest, and one ticket covers the whole group.
